Design Department Architecture is a Portland, OR firm offering full architectural and design services for clients. Formed in 2008, the firm remains small and focused on compelling projects of all scales.

Recent work includes mixed-use and adaptive reuse buildings, bars, restaurants, and offices. Design Department Architecture creates approachable, well crafted, and site-specific designs that are unique to each individual project.

 

 

Ben Hufford, Principal | Architect

Ben has an undergraduate degree in Fine Art from Carleton College, and a Masters in Architecture from the Graduate School of Design (GSD) at Harvard University. He has 30 years experience in architecture, has worked on both US coasts and Asia, and has a national NCARB registration. Ben holds active licenses in Oregon, Colorado and Washington, and is a LEED accredited professional.

Ben is the founder and Principal of Design Department Architecture where he has completed more than 90 projects including mixed-use and adaptive reuse buildings, bars, restaurants, and offices in Portland, OR. He can advise on feasibility of hospitality, retail, restaurant and bar locations. Ben recognizes and values that each client’s goals are unique.


Erin Murphy, Project Manager

Intuitive, organized, and a great communicator, Erin leads client discussions and builds collaborative relationships throughout the life of each project. Her background in commercial real estate allows her to consult on practical matters, in addition to designing distinctive spaces with her partner Ben.
